League of Women Voters of Wyoming Supports Challenge to HB 156

The League of Women Voters of Wyoming has filed an Amicus Brief in support of the legal challenge filed by the Equality State Policy Center opposing draconian changes to Wyoming’s election laws by House Bill 156.

These new voter registration rules went into effect July 1, and the lawsuit argues that the new rules create an undue burden on the right to vote and are unconstitutionally vague.

League of Women Voters of Wyoming President, Linda Barton, says, “HB 156 will only create more bureaucracy that prevents Wyoming citizens from exercising their fundamental right to vote. For decades, Wyoming’s elections have been secure and without fraud, without this law. The League is proud to speak out against this unnecessary and discriminatory law that will harm Wyoming residents and voters.”

HB 156 requires proof of 30-day residency and citizenship to register to vote and took effect on July 1. Check with your local County Clerk Elections Office for the new voter registration requirements and documentation.

Plaintiffs in this lawsuit must have legal standing, meaning that the party has a personal stake in the outcome. If you can demonstrate that these rule changes will significantly hinder your ability to vote, you may have standing. Please contact us at info@wyominglwv.org.
